Say “No” to Google Street View

Hurrah! for residents and personal privacy.  Locals in Broughton, Milton Keynes stopped the Google Street View car from taking pictures of their houses.

Like a lot of invasions Personal Privacy, the “intruder” often argues that “its for the good of all” and will benefit everyone.

What would you do if a stranger stood outside your house taking pictures?  What would happen to you, if you stood outside a government building, airport or railway station and took pictures?  You’d be be arrested under the “anti terrorism” laws.  Don’t laugh or dismiss this fact.  Amateur Photographers around the UK have been arrested or “moved on” under these laws.

Don’t get us wrong. We’re not technophobic.  We use Google Earth and other mapping systems ourselves, in fact some of our staff used to survey and make maps themselves, it’s a fantastic resource and tool. But allowing a commercial company to take pictures of peoples gardens, look in to living rooms and private property in such detail without permission from the owner, is invading personal privacy.

Although there is the “choice” to have your property removed from Street View by asking Google, this is a half hearted and shallow attempt by Google to “justify” them being able to infringe personal privacy.   Once your property has been put on Street view, it’s too late.

What about the old, and frail who don’t even know about Street View, who aren’t connected to the internet, let alone be able to request their property be removed – it’s totally beyond them.

There is a huge resistance for UK ID Cards on the grounds of privacy.  How is Street View different? why not the national “outcry” against it.?
